SITUATING is the seventh in an annual series of publications and showcases the work of 6 young architectural practices; Greg Kochnowski, ROEWUarchitecture, Lateral Architecture, Dan Hisel, LinOldhamOffice and Interboro. Selected by the Architectural League of New York, these practices use their works as a vehicle to understand their place within the larger realm of architecture.

SITUATING leads the architect to think of the multiplicty of the word itself. What defines the physical site? Where are the boundaries and what are the parmaeters from which the definition is derived? Where does one’s architectural work sit within the context of architectural exploration? How does one situate and build the scenario from which a design solution can be crafted?

The featured practices in this 175 page book all share a conscious shift away from seeing the world as static and determinant and architecture as a definite object within the urbanscape. Using ecology theory as an intellectual framework, Greg Kochanowski attempts to think about architecture as a set of relationships which is constantly evolving and this view is similarly shared by ROEWUarchitecture who has the opinion that infrastructure networks and information flows are constantly redefining the site conditions. Ultimately, these conditions forces the underlying question of SITUATING one’s works to the architect.

What this compilation succeeds in doing is presenting the strength of ideas and explorations inherent within the methodologies of these practices. The book eventually leads the reader to think about how one can see their own work being placed in a larger realm of works; inviting a re-think about situating one’s self, design principles and of course the engagement with the physical site.
