A practical, inspiring book about constructing new buildings with surplus materials, SUPERUSE was initiated as a movement by the Recyclicity foundation in Rotterdam. Compiled by Ed van Hinte, Cesare Peeren and Jan Jongert from 2012 Architects, the book presents ideas for tools and methods for SUPERUSE, such as a ‘harvest map’ of everything reusable within a given distance of a building’s site.
The chapters cover 5 main modes of SUPERUSE: “From the Ground Up, “Stacked Walls, “Taking Measures, “Packaging materials and “Machines + Commodities, providing real examples in the form of built work by 2012 Architects. SUPERUSE also considers the ecological and methodological points of view, providing an international directory of designers, architects, foundations, suppliers and organizations that themselves support the SUPERUSE cause.
The authors call for open-mindedness to factor reusable materials into design - usually marginally used because of the profession’s largely strong artisan tradition. They proclaim, “Many already practise regenerating enormous amounts of material to construct new buildings, but what if we shortcut this flow of materials from their state of maximum added value, to the stage at which value has either been dissipated or broken down?
The design and planning for the idiosyncrasies of SUPERUSE architecture requires architects to overcome the hampering effects of common practice. The authors themselves see this as a launching pad for SUPERUSE to be employed on a much larger scale, where its impact would be greater felt. But until that new door of opportunities opens, the world awaits the Superuser architects of the future. Could that be you?

The book is accompanied by a website that has become a growing source of information about reuse in all scales. Superuse.org is an online community of designers, architects and everybody else who is interested in inventive ways of recycling. The site allows you to post items at various scales within the reuse-topic. All examples of small commodities, furniture, interiors, buildings and reuse on urban scale are welcomed. Next to exhibiting applications, we promote the development of knowledge on the subject by starting up discussions, adding historical background and allowing usercomments.
