Five Foot Way Magazine - Exploring Asian Architecture

FiveFootWay - one year on.

By Adib on May 31, 2008

Sometime in May 2006, 2 architecture students in the National University of Singapore met up for coffee and the idea of doing an indie publication that would explore Asian Architecture was thrown up. One year on, in May 2007, the 2 friends met up for coffee again and decided that it was time to start 5ft Creatives and start producing what would be to be known as FiveFootWay Magazine.

Starting from absolute scratch with no contacts and no money, the two friends designed and built the website themselves, contacted firms, organisations and friends, pooled resources, time and energy and started  researching & writing. One year on, we now take a look and see what have happened in the last 365 days.

For the past year..

380 posts in 20 categories

all of which…

Written by a team that has grown from 2 writers in 1 country to 12 writers in 6 countries

And we are glad to have had wonderful supporters leading to…

Seventy Thousand Page Views and Seventeen Thousand Unique visitors

and our stats analysis show that…

Also, in addition to FFW magazine,

Thank you to all who have supported us in our baby steps over the last year. All of this would also not have been possible with the contributions of everyone in the team, support of family, friends and significant others. My deepest gratitude towards all, the growth of FFW is because of you.

Over the time we’ve made so many new friends and done so many things that is quite beyond our imagination when we first started. We have no plans to stop and we hope you will continue to walk with us on the FiveFootWay.

Adib is the co-founder of 5ft Creatives and he loves to walk on the FIVEFOOTWAY.

  3. Happened to chance upon 5ftway while googling for Spore’s latest addition to the architecture educational scene, after hearing from friends back home it was published in the ST.

I didn’t know about the plans to ‘reinvent’ 23 Amber Rd, and having spent a large portion of time around Katong and Siglap in the past, it is indeed a sad fact that developers do not see a possible, or economically viable, avenue to better design and market buildings which are so rich in architectural heritage.

But I think the critical question we must now ask ourselves: What are the creative people in our industry doing in terms of changing the mindsets of the layman? Lee Siang brought up the ‘evilness’ that we know of the working industry, but we should remember that should only serve to be the perfect primer for better intentions to let Singaporeans know and understand more about Design on the whole. The good or bad should be then left to the individual to decide.

Being architects, I sometimes think that we are wrongly trained to be more cynical, and disgrunted, individuals than we need to be… and fail to give praise when it is duly deserved.

So please continue to keep this running Adib… Great stuff!

  4. Hi Jeff..

thanks for the encouraging words.. yes.. i think the purpose of FFW is really to try and create a platform for us to examine ourselves as architects and also our practice. Slowly but surely, we are moving towards critically thinking about architecture and I hope more architects will step up and engage not just each other but also the larger community in order to advance the profession.
