
It has been read as a symbol of “a modern world powerâ€?. It has been held as “world-class architectureâ€? designed to complement a “world-class eventâ€?. It has been described as part of Beijing’s efforts to “look good for the summer Olympicsâ€?.
Now add the adjective fast to modern, world-class, powerful and good-looking and we will complete the picture the world is witnessing of Beijing’s amazing architectural work.
Beijing’s skyline has changed so radically in so short a period that it felt as if building and construction was all but the work of a single stroke of a painter’s brush.
Over recent years, some 10,000 sites have been put under construction. Although many of these projects will not see completion when the Olympics games start on August 8, the world will definitely not miss iconic “showpiecesâ€? such as the new CCTV tower, a spectacle of two inward-leaning towers interlocked in a lofty embrace, and of course, the bird’s nest inspired National Stadium where all the Olympics’ action will take place.
