BLDGBLOG – This Diseased Utopia: 10 Thoughts on Swine Flu and the City

In a recent post, referencing everything from le Corbusier to videogames, Geoff Manaugh poses spatial and urban questions for the city, questions stemming from the impending swine flu epidemic that is sweeping the world. Especially interesting and pointed are his thoughts about the medical utopia and the interface between man and nature; bringing back the idea of more of a separation rather than blurring of the boundaries between built and natural landscapes, making many of us wonder why we thought urban farming was such a good idea in the first place; as one of the commenters put it, “Some people are puzzled as to how human, pig, and bird strains of the flu have mixed together, but if you have spent any time in rural Mexico the answer is obvious: these creatures all live together in close quarters.
