MIPIM Future Project Awards 2010

The search continues for the icons of tomorrow as the MIPIM AR Future Project Awards call for entries
The designers of tomorrow’s iconic architecture have been invited to follow in the footsteps of previous winners, such as Kim Kwan Joong / Samoo Architects and Engineers (who won in 2009 for Magok Waterfront, Seoul) to submit their designs in competition for the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards 2010.

The annual awards scheme, which has reached its eighth year, identifies and celebrates good quality architectural design for projects either still on the drawing board or under construction, and is well established as the centrepiece event for architects during the MIPIM conference and exhibition each March.

Paul Finch, the director of the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards, said, “the Future Project Awards has an excellent track record of identifying projects which subsequently go on to be both realized and critically celebrated. For example, previous winner St Mary’s Axe was awarded the Stirling Prize just eighteen months after being celebrated at Future Projects in Cannes.
“I’m looking forward to viewing this year’s entrants. We always see a wide selection of high caliber projects from all over the world, and MIPIM is a perfect opportunity to showcase the highest standards in architectural design.”
The MIPIM AR Future Project Awards are truly international, with last year’s winning schemes hailing from Brazil, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Spain and France, with commended schemes from Kenya, India, Turkey, Qatar, UK, China, Singapore, Jordan, Ireland, Lebanon, Mexico, Italy and Egypt.
2009’s winning practices included Isay Weinfeld Arquitetura for the Overall Winner, 360º Building, São Paulo; Kim Kwan Joong / Samoo Architects and Engineers for Magok Waterfront, Seoul; Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects for their Holbæk Harbour Masterplan and sports and leisure complex, Holbæk, Denmark; Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Vilady Asociados for Reconnecting and Regenerating Valladolid city centre Spain; de Rijke Marsh Morgan Architects for their timber stadium research design; Perkins + Will for Sail Tower: Kempinski Hotel and serviced residences, Jeddah; and Odile Decq Benoit Corenette Architects for Pavilion 8 office building and floating restaurant, Lyon.
The call for entries for the 2010 Awards has now been issued, with nominations welcome in the following categories:
- Big Urban projects
- Regeneration and Masterplanning
- Tall buildings
- Mixed use
- Offices
- Residential
- Retail and leisure
There will also be an additional Sustainability prize awarded to one project entered in any of the above categories, and an Overall Winner award will also be announced from among the prize winners. Neither of these categories can be entered separately.
An international jury, chaired by Paul Finch, will be announced shortly.
Robert Sakula of Ash Sakula Architects, a previous winner of the Awards said, “winning the award has been a fantastic boost in upping our profile with both old and new clients, and it has also been a huge boost for our winning project, giving it added status and credibility even before a brick is laid”.
Meanwhile, Rich Naish of RTA Studio said, “It was an honour for our practice to receive a commendation in the MIPIM AR Future Projects Awards 08. Particularly for a New Zealand practice, it was a great experience having a project measured against a world platform of un-built projects. The awards evening was an excellent opportunity to meet other competing architects and the judges. Our project is almost complete now and has enjoyed some great exposure as a result of the awards programme”.
The Awards will be presented during a special celebratory dinner held in Cannes on 17 March 2010 during the MIPIM market, an event that has become one of the hot ticket evenings of MIPIM week. There will also be a permanent exhibition of all entrants on display on the London Stand, and all winning and commended schemes will be published in the official catalogue which is distributed to all registered MIPIM delegates.
The MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards are organised in participation with Emap Construct, and are supported by Protek.
