The upgraded FIVEFOOTWAY

Hello and welcome to the latest upgraded version of fivefootway.com. This is version 2.1 and you’ll notice that the website looks more streamlined and ‘cleaner’. This is currently a public beta version which means that more tweaks will be made in the coming weeks as we listen to your feedback and also as we discover more quirks.

At the moment, we are still in the process of cleaning up content of yesteryears to suit the current layout and also, we will be updating some of the information on the site in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, allow me to give you a quick overview of the key changes to the website.

Archifest 08 is Singapore’s 2nd Architectural Festival and this year, it revolves around the theme of Man+Environment. Happening in the month of October 2008, it will feature a line-up of tours, exhibitions, talks, forum and a range of fringe activities.

Organized by the Singapore Institute of Architects, the main aim of the festival is to provide a platform to breed a vibrant design culture, and consequently a design conscious society, by encouraging and guiding the general public and design professionals of all fields to interact in a fun and free atmosphere.

FIVEFOOTWAY.com is proud to be the official online media for this event and we will be bringing you the latest news about Archifest 08 and more! Also, you can expect a little 5ft touch into Archifest with Adib who is part of the Archifest Committee.

Server migration and stuff that’s related to it.

Since FiveFootWay.com went ‘live’, we’ve been hosted on a US-based server. However, we are now in the process of migrating to a Singapore-based server for various reasons, one of which is in consideration of our up and coming plans for fivefootway.com .

The transition started a couple of days ago and it has been relatively alright. Our main site (www.fivefootway.com) is working just fine and if you are very inclined to noticing details, you might note that the page loads a little bit faster now.

Having said that, two of our other sites; this 5ft Blog and the official Magical Spaces project microsite, will be experiencing some changes over the next few weeks as follows.

The 5ft Blog

This blog will see a new life being breathed into it. Over the next few weeks, we will be re-importing relevant old content into this blog and at the same time, you can expect to see another face lift to this site.

The Magical Spaces Project microsite

This website is currently offline and is experiencing a re-design.  We will be updating it with all relevant information about the project and… we’ve got some new developments and updates on this pet project of ours.

JJ, Director-5ft Foreign Legion

Meet Yeo Jia-Jun. Ok, to be cool, he calls himself JJ.

JJ is the co-founder of 5ft Creatives and is now based in the USA where he is continuing his formal education in architecture. Before going over to that side of the globe, JJ studied architecture in the National University of Singapore.

JJ epitomizes the cool, global, educated architect of the future and it is only right that he is the Director of 5ft Creatives’ Foreign Legion. He is like the cool front man of a rock band who indulges in beautifully made magazines and spectacles. He thinks that Adib added a ‘J’ to his name to be cool like him. As a matter of fact, he is so cool that he’s not going to tell you what cool people do when they are not working. (Just to maintain that sense of mystery surrounding cool people)

Adib, Director-Department of Everything

Adib

Adib is the co-founder of 5ft Creatives. He is the Director of the Department of Everything in 5ft Creatives, i.e. his job scope entails directing everything.

Deep inside, he is a geek and a nerd. There have also been rumors that he is a Google and Mac Ninja. (He is actually a Jedi Master)

Concurrently, Adib is also a Senior Designer at FARMWORK where he works on brilliant spatial designs with a whole bunch of awesome people. Before starting to loiter on the FIVEFOOTWAY and becoming a FARM-er, Adib had his formal architectural education at the National University of Singapore.

Adib loves doing nothing when he is not working. He also has a love-hate relationship with Architecture, loves good design, soccer, all things Mac, his family and his girlfriend (not necessarily in that order). He occasionally blogs about his life.

*Adib doesn’t like his photo to be taken and that is why he is roar-ing at the camera.

FIVEFOOTWAY- A channel of architectural discourse off the mainstream

We were honoured to be mentioned in the speech by the Singapore Institute of Architect’s President, Mr Tai Lee Siang during the Institute’s Annual Dinner held on 21 May 2008 At Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre, Singapore.

He was quoted as saying that FIVEFOOTWAY is an example of

“a channel of architectural discourse that is off the mainstream”.

He also proposed that FIVEFOOTWAY be

“used as a model to encourage greater architectural discourse amongst practitioners, students and enthusiasts alike.”

We are proud to be recognised as worthy of a mention within the fraternity and we will be continuing our efforts to find innovative ways to explore architecture.
